Imagine you’re in Madison Square Garden playing basketball, you have possession of the ball and the clock is ticking.
There are millions of fans watching, one faint voice out of the crowd manages to reach your ears, you pause and all that is heard is “take it to the basket,” as those words clear your mind of everything but getting to the basket to score the winning points, you come back to excitement of the game and realize that you are in midst of a zone defense combined with the trap technique, which you are double teamed and the defense is applying pressure.
If you were Allen Iverson you could easily fake one way and go another and with any contact receive a bell-out foul call courtesy of being a NBA superstar. But you’re not, and to compensate for the difference, a wide knowledge of zone defense is needed to gain a vantage point.
“The zone is designed to protect the basket,” said Head Coach Mark Imhoff.
“In zone trap defensively, it’s a gamble,” Imhoff adds.
The gamble comes when the defense commits two people to just one ball handler, limiting the defensive play of to four offenders to against 3 defenders.

Another way to gain an advantage is to pass through the zone and the pressure to find the open player for the open shot.
“One way to go about alleviating trap pressure in a zone usually involves putting someone in the middle (of the court)”, said Imhoff.
After the pressure is relieved and the zone has been broken down you are now free to make the decision of what to do in double team zone defense and how to beat it. With time winding down you make the decision and decide how it all ends.
